US Congressman. A member of the Democratic Party, he served in the US House of Representatives for Missouri's 5th congressional district, from March 1931 until January 1943. Born to Irish immigrants, as a youth, he moved with his parents to Girard, Kansas and following the death of his father, the family moved to Kansas City, Missouri. He was introduced to politics through his older brother and served in several local political posts. He then studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1905 and established a law practice in Kansas City, Missouri. In 1930 he was elected to Congress, defeating the Republican incumbent Edgar C. Ellis and would be elected for another five consecutive terms. During his first term, he served as Chairman of Commission investigating Government competition with private business. In 1942 he was not a candidate for reelection and was succeeded by fellow Democrat Roger G. Slaughter. He died at the age of 76, just two months after leaving office.
