Presidential Cabinet Secretary. He graduated from Colgate University in 1934, from Cornell Law School in 1937, was admitted to the bar and entered private law practice in New York City. He was assistant district attorney for New York County (1938-42) and served as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he returned to his district attorney position and was chief counsel of the Senate War Investigating Committee (1947-49). With the election of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, he became Deputy Attorney General, in 1953 and he was appointed the 63rd U.S. Attorney General, serving (1957-61). In 1969, President Richard Nixon appointed Rogers the 55th U.S. Secretary of State, serving until 1973. After leaving the Cabinet, he resumed the practice of law until death from heart failure.
