James was the eldest of thirteen children. On January 11, 1904, he married Dinah Harvey in Alden, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. The ceremony was performed by Rev. D.W. Coxe. The couple had eight children: Margaret, James, Jane, Dinah, Dora, Hazel, James, and Harold. He worked his entire life as a coal mine laborer. He was employed by the Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western Coal Company at the Auchincloss Colliery in Nanticoke, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.

Cause of Death: Emphysema and anthracosilicosis
