They divorced and she spent most of her adult life living in Chevy Chase, Maryland until she moved to Raleigh in her later years. Bess and Bob had three children: Robert Henry Gibbs, Jr., Benjamin Kilgore Gibbs and George Sabin Gibbs. Robert worked with the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. He died April 3, 1988 in Bethesda, Maryland. He was cremated and his ashes were spread under a weeping willow in the Catkills, Roxbury, New York. His brothers survive.
