SHELBYVILLE -- Joseph E. Burks, 89, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2011, at Jewish Hospital Shelbyville.
Born in New Albany, Ind., he was the son of the late Richard Thornton and Allie Mae Davis Burks.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the Marine Corps in the South Pacific. He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, where he was a former trustee and the chairman of the Building Committee following the devastating fire in 1978.
He began his career at age 17 as owner of the John Deere dealership in Hodgenville, Ky. For over 50 years, he was the owner and operator of Shelby Supply in Shelbyville, and during part of that period, Shelby Supply in Taylorsville. A member and past president of the Kentucky Farm Power Equipment Dealers Association, his memberships also included the Hodgenville Masonic Lodge, and he served as the first president of the PTA at Shelby County High School.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, John Jay Crittenden Burks, and brothers Richard Thornton Burks Jr. and Carl Davis Burks.
Survivors include his wife of nearly 67 years, Mary Anderson Burks; sons Joseph Edwards (Dorothy) Burks II of Shelbyville, Carl David Burks of Detroit Michigan, Mark Athel (Patty) Burks of Shelbyville, and Paul Morgan (Jeane) Burks of Austin, Texas; a daughter, Bonnie Burks (William Whitie) Gray of Shelbyville; brothers William D. Burks of Hodgenville, and John M. (Jane) Burks of Elizabethtown; sisters Martha Vivian Owens of Shelbyville and Mary Jane Wylie of Louisville, Miss.; and grandchildren Leeta Gray Kennedy, Adriel Solomon Gray, Joseph Edwards Burks III, John Jay Crittenden Burks, Abigail Lee Burks Mary Elizabeth Burks, Michael Anthony Burks and Bridgette Lee Burks.
The funeral is 11 a.m. Friday at Centenary United Methodist Church of Shelbyville, with the Rev. Mark Gibbons officiating. Interment will be in Grove Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m. Thursday at Hall-Taylor Funeral Home, and after 9 a.m. Friday at the church. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the New Building Fund of Centenary United Methodist Church.
