Jap was the son of James Jasper Adams and Lucinda Smith. He married Phoebe Paralee Bryan. Their children were James William "Will" Adams, Thomas Peter Adams, Joseph David Adams, John Levi Adams, Robert Wright "Bob" Adams, Sallie Louisa "Allie" Davis, and Richard "Buck" Adams.
