US Congressman. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was a merchant in Autauga County, Alabama, when he joined the Confederate Army and served in the division commanded by General Joseph Wheeler. After the war, he engaged in agricultural pursuits, studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1867. Practicing law in Prattville, Alabama, he also was the county superintendent of education (1875-84). In 1885, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-ninth Congress, serving until 1887. An unsuccessful candidate for renomination, he resumed his legal practice in Prattville, Alabama, until his death at age 65.
