John Thomas NORTH (Samuel 1) was born on 6 Jun 1837 in Millersburg Twp, Holmes County, Ohio, died on 1 Jan 1909 in Scott Twp, Henry County, Iowa at age 71, and was buried in Winfield- Scott Cemetery, Henry County, Iowa.
General Notes: John was a farmer.

In 1841 he went with his parents to near New London, Henry County, Iowa.
In the 1870 census they were living in New London Twp, Henry County, Iowa (Pg 289B). They were listed as: J Thomas North - 33 - farmer - born in Ohio; Maria L - 26 - born in Pennsylvania; Charles - 2 - born in Iowa; James H - 8/12.

In the 1880 census they were living in New London Twp, Henry County, Iowa (Pg 356). They were listed as: John T North - 43 - farmer - born in Ohio; Maria L - 36 - born in Pennsylvania; Charles S - 11 - born in Iowa; James H - 10; Frank - 6; Mable - 2.
He sold his land in 1882 and bought 160 acres in Scott Township of the same county.
In the 1900 census they were living in Scott Twp, Henry County, Iowa (Pg 167). They were listed as: John T North - 63 - born in Ohio - farmer; Maria - 56 - born in Pennsylvania; Frank R - 26 - born in Iowa - school teacher; Fred H - 8.
In the Civil War he enlisted at Keokuk, Iowa as a private in Co. E, 1st Iowa Vol. Cavalry and was honorably discharged at Little Rock, Arkansas on Jan. 4, 1864. He re-enlisted as a sergent Jan. 5, 1864 in the same unit and was discharged at Austin, Texas on Feb. 15, 1866. He participated in the following battles: Meradozine, Mo.; Lone Jack, Fayetteville, Mo.; Jenkins Ferry, Prairie Grove, Bymerta and Little Rock, Ark. He was a Scout for forty days, during which time he participated in numerous engagements. In the Camden Campaign, under Steele, they fought a hard battle at Saline River, and were under fire for ten days in a running fight with General Price.

His obituary in the 7 Jan 1909 Winfield Beacon, Winfield, IA reads: "John T. North was born in Ohio, June 6, 1837 and died at his home in Winfield, Iowa January 1,
1909. "At the age of four years he came with his parents, who settled in Henry Co., Iowa, near New
London. "April 11, 1867, he was united in marriage to Maria L. Smith. To them were born five children:
Charles, of Winfield; Dr. Frank R., of Mediapolis; Mrs. Mabel Bigler, of Burlington; Fred, of Winfield; and James H. deceased.
