LYNCH, JOHN DENIS M.D. Dr. Lynch, age 75, died March 16 in Encinitas. He was born in Seattle, WA, March 5, 1926. Dr. Lynch was a surgeon in San Bernardino for over 24 years. He received his B.S. at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa. in 1946, his M.D. from Marquette School of Medicine in Milwaukee in 1949, and his surgical residency at the University of Michigan in 1956. He then served as a captain in the U.S. Air Force for 2 years. Dr. Lynch had a private practice in general surgery in San Bernardino from 1956 to 1980 and was active on the staff of St. Bernardine Hospital, Community Hospital, and the San Bernardino County Medical Center. He held the positions of Asst. Clinical Professor of Surgery at UCLA, Chief of Surgery and Chief of Staff at St. Bernardine's. In 1980, Dr. Lynch felt forced to give up his surgical practice due to severe back pain. In 1983 he completed a 3-year residency at UCLA in Radiation Oncology and began a new career. From 1985 to 1988 he was an Asst. Professor in Radiation Oncology at Loma Linda University School of Medicine. In 1988 he became the first director of the Dept. of Radiation Oncology at St. Bernardine Medical Center's new Radiation Oncology Center. He was a member of the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, American College of Surgeons, American Board of Radiology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, California Radiological Society, Frederick A. Coller Surgical Society, and the Western Surgical Association. In 1999 Dr Lynch retired to his beach home in Encinitas which he had owned since 1970. He was a much-loved husband, brother, father, grandfather, physician, friend, and mentor. He lightened people's hearts with his great wit, compassion, and generosity. He was a rare man with a zest for living; we will miss his enthusiasm and inspiration. Survivors include his wife, Barbara; two sons, Michael of London, England, and John of Lake Arrowhead; three daughters, Peggy of Berkeley, Eileen of Encinitas, and Jennifer of Vista; his brother Norman of Milwaukee; his sister Eileen of Dallas; and seven grandchildren.
