"Uncle George" took care of his family. Although he and his wife Hattie Tate did not have children of their own, their house in West Marion was always open to family. When Hattie's niece Stella Tate lost her mother in 1921, Stella came to live with them at age 2. When Hattie Tate died in 1930, George had his sister Hattie Pendergrass and her daughter Ila move in, as they needed a place to live. In 1931, George brought his sister Mary Lou Taylor and her daughter Josephine home to live when Robert Taylor died in Tennessee. The three girls, Stella, Ila, and Josephine, lived as sisters and remained close the rest of their lives. When Josephine married in 1944, George walked her down the aisle at First Baptist Church of Marion.

George was a Contractor and Builder of Homes in Marion for many years. He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church. In 1909, he was a Charter Member of the Greenlee Baptist Church.
