He graduated from Princeton College in 1852, from the law school of the University of Virginia in 1855, was admitted to the bar in 1856 and commenced to practice law in Demopolis, Alabama. During the Civil War, he served in the Confederate Army as Captain of Company D, Alabama Regiment and was judge advocate in the Confederate War Department (1864-65). After the war, he practiced law and was a member of the Alabama State Senate (1872-73). In 1877, elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fifth Congress, serving until 1879 and elected to the Forty-eighth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Thomas H. Herndon, reelected to the Forty-ninth and Fiftieth Congresses, serving (1883-89). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was circuit judge of the first judicial circuit of Alabama from 1890, until his death.
