1940 Dec 26-Carthage, Tenn.-Funeral services of Mrs. Lavinia L. Ragland, 86, who died at her home in Carthage Friday afternoon, after a long illness, were conducted at the residence Saturday afternoon by Rev. W. H. Atkins, pastor of the Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. Howard Bennett, pastor of the Baptist Church, and the Rev. J. L. Smotherman.
Burial was in Ridgewood cemetery. Mrs. Ragland’s death was not unexpected. She had been ill for 15 weeks, the second of two serious attacks she had suffered this year.
A native of Gainsboro, where she was born Nov.16,1854. Mrs. Ragland was the daughter of the late William and Adeline Putty. She was married to Hency C. Myers, who died in 1888.
Mr. Myers was a farmer and they lived in Jackson Co. until his death. To this union were born four children, Charles B. Myers, who died in 1923; Fred and Martin Myers of Carthage; and Mrs. Annie Myers Whittington, of Forrest City. She was married to Dr. William Hardin Ragland of Cookeville, Tenn. where the family resided for several years. Dr. Ragland died in 1927. Two children were born to this union, Miss Nan Ragland, of Carthage, and Miss Grace Ragland who died in Washington in 1920. Mrs. Ragland was also the step mother of two daughters, Mrs. Mary Butler Dillon, of Campbellsville, Ky., and Mrs. E. H. Boyd of Cookeville. Five grandchildren also survive, they are, Mrs. Gladys Coughran, Gilbertsville, Ky.; Charles Henry Myers, Aberdden, Miss.; Mrs. Howard Feder, Huntingdon, Tenn.; Joseph Whittington, Forrest City, Ark.; and Mrs. C. J. Pierce of Clarksville, Ark. Mrs. Ragland had been an active member of the Methodist Church for many years.
