Louisiana's first black Lieutenant Governor, elected in 1868 during the height of Reconstruction. He died in office in 1871 and was succeeded by P.B.S. Pinchback, who went on to become the first black Governor of the state.US Politician. He was the first African American Lieutenant Governor in United States history, serving in Louisiana from 1868 to 1872. He was the son of an emancipated slave.
