U.S. Congressman. He moved with his parents to New York City in 1882 and to New Jersey, in 1884. There he studied law, was admitted to bar in 1896 and commenced to practice law in Hackensack, New Jersey. During the Spanish American War, he served as a Major in the 2nd Regiment, New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, US Army. After the war, he served four years in the 23rd Regiment of the New York National Guard, was banker, publisher and real estate agent. In 1912, he was elected as a Democrat to the Sixty-second Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of William Hughes, serving until 1913, and reelected to the Sixty-fourth Congress, serving (1913-17). Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law and was prosecuting attorney for Bergen County, (1920-30).
