U.S. Congressman. He attended Pittsfield Academy, graduated from Union College in 1832, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1835 and commenced to practice law in New York City. Moving to Washington, D.C., he established the Madisonian in 1837 and was printer to the U.S. House of Representatives (1837-39) and printer to the U.S. Senate, (1839-42). He moved to St. Louis, Missouri, in 1842), was a member of the Missouri State Senate, (1850-54), was a contractor for railway improvements, built more than 1,000 miles of railway and took the first steam locomotive across the Mississippi River, in 1852. In addition, he was also president of the St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern Railway. In 1881, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-seventh Congress and served until his death at age 69.
