Presidential Cabinet Secretary. He began his political career as supervisor for the New Jersey Relief Administration, serving 1932-37, and later he was appointed to the New York City division of Works Administration. During World War II, he served as head of the labor relations division of the U.S. Army Construction Program and became director of industrial personnel for the War Department in 1942. After the war, he was he was hired by the U.S. Army for personnel work in Germany and was later responsible for personnel work in Korea. He also served as Assistant Secretary of the Army in charge of manpower and reserve forces affairs. In 1953, President Dwight D. Eisnehower appointed him as a Republican the 8th U.S. Secretary of Labor, serving until 1961. After leaving office, he retired from politics and served as Senior Vice President for the Crown Zellerbach Corporation until his death from a heart attack. For his major contributions, he was posthumously inducted into the U.S. Department of Labor Hall of Fame, in 1989.
