He was born Nov. 1, 1917, in Clatskanie to Johnny Reed and Mary Louise "Nana" (Combs) Holmes. He attended Clatskanie Elementary and Mist, Ore., grade school, then graduated from Benson High School in Portland.
Mr. Holmes was a logger, sawmill worker for RSG Forest Products, a cattle rancher and a construction worker in Coos Bay, Ore. He also co-owned Valley Market in Clatskanie as a butcher and did custom meat-cutting for many years.
He married Esther Kaufman on Dec. 24, 1938, in Stevenson, Wash. She preceded him in death Feb. 27, 2001.
Survivors include four daughters, Darlene Price, Jeanette Smith, Constance Kitchin and Kathleen Guido; a son, Clyde Reed Holmes Jr.; a sister, Janice May Bunting; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday at Haakinson-Groulx Mortuary Chapel in Clatskanie. Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Haakinson-Groulx chapel. Vault interment will follow at Woodbine Cemetery in Rainier.
