S. Sgt. Neubauer Dies In Viet Nam Fighting
A Portage Army veteran of 19 years, S. Sgt. James Neubauer, age 34, was killed late Friday in Viet Nam.
His parents, Mrs. Theodore Twitchell, Portage and Roy Neubauer, 2138 LaFollette ave., Madison, were notified of his death Saturday.
Sgt. Neubauer had been in the service 19 years and was to retire in 1 1/2 years. He had served in Viet Nam with the first Division since September 1965. Previously, he served for nine years in Germany with the 26th Infantry.
Army authorities reported that he was killed by a booby trap grenade.
He was the first Portage soldier to die in Viet Nam.
Sgt Neubauer was last home in July, 1965, when he was on leave prior to shipping out for Viet Nam.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include two brothers, Larry Twitchell of Portage and Robert Neubauer, 325 Kedzie St., Madison; and a sister, Mrs. Lloyd Simonson of Portage.
