Community Founder. He was born in China, Maine, the son of Nathaniel and Betsey (Ward) Spratt. He married (1)Olive Amanda Crawford. He had a substitute serve in his place during the Civil War. The name of his substitute was John Melville Crawford, who mustered into the U.S. Army on March 13, 1865. (John Melville Crawford, known as Melville Crawford, was the brother of Olive Amanda Crawford, Melville's first wife.) Melville and Olive had two children, Thomas and Lucy. She passed away in 1868. He then pioneered to Michigan, where he settled in Alpena County, and founded the community of Spratt, Michigan. He married (2)Margaret McDonald on June 10, 1897, and their children are Clay, Ralph, Ira and Winfield. Melville Spratt became the first postmaster of Spratt, Michigan, on March 2, 1900.
