US Congressman, Lawyer. He was a United States Representative from the State of Connecticut. He was born one of seven children as Charles S. Pomeroy to Noah Pomeroy (1786-1868), and his wife Mary "Nancy" Merriman Pomeroy (1788-1856), in Meriden, Connecticut, on September 3, 1825. He was educated locally where he received an academic education. He then studied and practiced law for a time before he moved to the State of Iowa in 1855, and settled in an area now known as the defunct community of Boonesboro in Boone County, Iowa. He then pursued an interest in agricultural pursuits and eventually politics when he served as a Receiver of the United States Land Office at Fort Dodge, Iowa, from September 11, 1861, until his resignation on March 3, 1869. He then decided to run for a seat in the United States Congress and was elected to succeed the outgoing United States Representative Asahel Wheeler Hubbard (1819-1879) on March 4, 1869. A Member of the Republican Party, he then served Iowa's 6th District (Forty-First Congress), in the United States House of Representatives from March 4, 1869, to March 3, 1871. Following his term in the United States Congress he was succeeded in the United States Congress by the incoming United States Representative Jackson Orr (1832-1926), on March 4, 1871. After leaving the United States Congress he worked as a United States Claims Adjuster in Washington, D.C. until his death on February 11, 1891. He passed away following a battle with heart disease in Washington, D.C., on February 11, 1891, at the age of 65, and he was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Washington, D.C. He was married to Marion Hodges Leonard Pomeroy (1826-1899), on March 16, 1848, with whom he had two children, a son, and a daughter. His wife Marion survived him by eight years passing away on August 1, 1899, at the age of 73, but she was buried in East Cemetery in Meriden, Connecticut.
