Escondido classmates mourn Tenise Peterson, 7th-grade honor pupil: Newspaper Obituary and Death Notice
Evening Tribune (San Diego, CA) - November 28, 1990

Deceased Name: Escondido classmates mourn Tenise Peterson, 7th-grade honor pupil

"Everyone thought Tenise was really, really sweet," said Sherry Kol, 10. "And everyone is taking it pretty hard. A lot of the kids went home and cried."
The fifth-grader at Rincon School in Escondido was talking yesterday about the sudden death of Tenise Peterson, 12, a seventh-grade honor pupil who collapsed in a gym class at her school Monday and later died at Palomar Medical Center.
Sherry was one of 1,100 pupils at Rincon who were told of Tenise's death at the beginning of school yesterday.
Tenise, who was named the outstanding scholar at Rincon last year, collapsed after a light workout in physical education.
She had just gone though warm-up exercises and a 150-yard run, and was walking with friends to the basketball court to play ball.
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation at the scene failed to revive her, said school officials, and paramedics took her to Palomar, where she died about 3 p.m. Monday, leaving family, schoolmates and staff saddened and shocked.
"Rarely do you lose a child like this," said Rincon Principal Ron Guiles, who said a special crisis team of four psychologists and a school counselor were brought in to deal with the pupils' grief yesterday morning after school officials formally told Rincon pupils about her death.
He said about 100 pupils, including immediate classmates and friends, received special attention and counseling during the day.
A letter to parents also was sent home with each pupil, advising them that counseling for their child was available at the school if they felt it was necessary.
"What a delightful child," said the principal. "Tenise was absolutely the outstanding seventh-grade student. The whole school is saddened."
San Diego County Supervising Deputy Coroner Cal Vine said an autopsy yesterday showed that Tenise's death was natural, resulting from a rupture of a blood vessel in her brain.
He said she died of a hemorrhage due to a cerebral aneurysm.
"This is a very rapid rupture of a blood vessel in her brain. It happens, but it usually happens in older persons in their 20s and 30s."
Vine said there is no warning or preventive measures for this kind of death.
"It's something you can't predict," said Vine.
Vice Principal Steve McLeod said a memorial fund is being established for Tenise Peterson in care of the Escondido National Bank, 613 W. Valley Parkway, Escondido, 92025.
"The whole staff and student body are suffering a loss," said McLeod. "She was a very special student, and everyone just loved her."
Tenise, a straight-A pupil who yearly won the outstanding-student award in her classes, was the daughter of Dale and Tamara Peterson of Escondido. She was one of seven children, including Tawna, a fifth-grader at Rincon.
Guiles said the crisis team yesterday also gave special counseling to Tawna's classmates because they were especially close to the sister and Tenise.
"We just told the students the truth about her death, and gave them the chance to ask questions," said Guiles. "We were impressed the way the students handled it. They went through a denial stage at first, but then they began accepting it by midday."
Sherry, the fifth-grader at Rincon, said she didn't believe that Tenise had died at first.
"Then I got really sad," said Sherry. "A lot of kids knew her, and everyone thought she was real smart. I was in her sister's class last year."
McLeod Mortuary in Escondido is handling arrangements.
