Abner was the son of James and Mary Ann Harrelson McBride.

He married Tabitha Jane Cooper, daughter of John & Susan (Ferguson) Cooper, June 5, 1845 in Spring Creek, Yell County, Arkansas.

Together they had nine children, Andrew Jasper, Caleb Webster, Mary Susan, Matilda Elizabeth, John Cooper,Lucinda Tennesse, Francis Marion, Louisa Jane, Eliza Jane.
