Civil War Union Army Officer. He was mustered in as a Captain in Company A, the 125th New York Volunteer Infantry on August 12, 1862, and served until he resigned on November 19, 1862. On February 9, 1863 he was commissioned Captain, US Volunteers, and was mustered into the Commissary of Subsistence Department. He served until he was honorably mustered out on July 20, 1865, having been brevetted Major, US Volunteers on July 29, 1865 for "efficient and meritorious service". In 1877, he was a passenger agent for the Missouri Pacific Railroad. In 1883 he was Major General of the Kansas State Militia.
Served as Mayor of Wyandotte County Kansas from 1883-1885 , Treasurer 1903-1907 and Mayor from 1907-1909.

After the war he moved to Kansas, and served as the Republican Mayor of Wyandotte, Kansas from 1883 to 1885, and as Mayor of Kansas City, Kansas from 1907 to 1909.
