BEN & ETHEL WAID
by James Waid
What many long-time members of Parfreyville UMC will remember, or at least may have heard of, is the dedication to the Church and God of Ben & Ethel Waid. The Christian Herald article from 1950, "The Singing Waids" explains pretty well the devotion that they had to this church and its members. This is copied in the 1956 centennial book as well as much of the church history.
What newer members may not know is how deep the roots of Ben, and in particular Ethel, went in the church and the Parfreyville community.
Ben Waid was born in Waushara County in the town of Spring Water on June 24, 1882. He was the next to the youngest of nine children of Joseph Townsend Waid and Mary Eliza (Pooler) Waid. Ben moved to Waupaca County sometime around 1900 and (we assume) stayed with his older sister, Livonia (Waid) Baker, and her husband, Otis. The Bakers had a farm on the site of the current Neuman residence.
While working in the Parfreyville area, Ben met Ethel Olive Gotham. Ethel was the daughter of John Oscar Gotham and Romelia Jane (Court) Gotham. Ben and Ethel were married November 20, 1907.
Family members of Ethel were deeply involved with the Parfreyville Church and community. The obituary of Lucy A. Gotham, Ethel's grandmother, tells us that "she, along with her husband (John) and oldest child, were three of the ten who organized the church at Parfreyville."
On her mother's side was a family that was also very dedicated to the Parfreyville Church. The Court parents and children were members for many years. Our family history indicates that an uncle to Ethel, Frank W. Court, was the first, and as far as we know, the only member of this church to be ordained a minister. Dr. Court eventually moved to Iowa. His son, Frank A. Court, was also ordained in the UMC.
The bridge that Ben and Ethel took to the church has been removed, the old house and barn taken down, but we, as members of the Waid family, have many wonderful memories of special visits to Grandpa Ben and Grandma Ethel's farm as children.
