James was the son of William Chatham & Mary E. Tate. He married 25 Aug. 1859 in Forsyth Co. Ga., Jane Elizabeth Phillips, & they had two daughters Manerva Emeline Chatham & Sarah E. Chatham. James died from disease while serving during the Civil War. Confederate service records show his date of death as 28 Feb. 1864, even though 4 Mar. 1864 is recorded on his tombstone. His widow married second 27 Oct. 1866 to Ephraim H. Chadwick.

Note - Corporal, Company C, 36th GA Infantry Regiment.
