From "The Greene Family and Its Branches" by Lora S. LaMance: Riley Rinaldo Barnes had a roving disposition in his younger days. He spent the years fro 1858 to 1862 in California, Oregon and the Rocky Mountains, when these regions were considered quite outside of civilization. He was a mill-wright, and a good one. He put up many mills in the states that border Canada. For 14 years he made his home with his nephew, Theodore A. Emerson, of Brandon, Minnesota. The last ten years of his life were spent with his brother and brother's family, the widow and children of Hartwell Barnes in Iowa. he was totally blind for nine years. Riley was turned like his father, abrupt of speech, but kind of heart. He was well read and observant. He served three years in an Oregon company during the Civil War.

1880 Chippewa, Douglas Co. Minnesota Riley was living with Theodore Emerson, Theodore's wife, Mary, their children, Roxana, Byron, Lenore and Eva, also Ezekial Marden, who worked on Theodore's farm. Riley's occupation was given as mill-wright, and he was 51 years of age.
