Woman Dies After Police Get Kin Suicide's (sic) Note
Mrs. Eva Utzinger, 74-year-old mother-in-law of Raymond Scott, Taft schoolteacher, died last night in Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital and a note indicating that Scott may have been responsible for her death was turned over to police.
The 60-year-old Scott was killed Tuesday when he leaped from the N. Broadway Bridge at Pasadena Ave. His widow Lucille told police that the suicide apparently was prompted by much family illness. Both she and her son had been ill. On a vacation, Scott had been visiting at the Utzinger home, 368 S. Ave. 21.
Skull Fractured
Shortly before Scott's suicide Mrs. Scott found her mother lying at the foot of outside stairs leading to the cellar of her home. At the hospital physicians discovered she had suffered a basal skull fracture.
A hatchet bearing dark stains that might be blood was turned over to the police laboratory after detectives had found it in Mrs. Utzinger's cellar.
Tells of Breakdown
Yesterday Mrs. Scott gave Highland Park Dets. Thomas Buckley and George Shelton a note in her husband's handwriting that was found in the cellar of her mother's home. It read:
"I must end the source of trouble in this house. You know whom I mean. And so, I am jumping from the N. Broadway Bridge. You have been a wonderful family. Here is insurance to get you well."
The note was not signed.
