Born to Leo and Evelyn (Shasteen) Bracelen, he was the youngest of three, he grew to manhood in Lincoln, Nebraska. Jim was a younger brother to Leo Henry Jr. and Jean Elaine Barnett. He moved to Covina, California with his family in 1956. He worked for Carrier Day & Night Payne in City of Industry, California for 35 years.

At the age of 17 he enlisted with the USNR on January 28, 1953, he served on the USS Iowa. He was Honorably discharged on January 27, 1961.

Dad was married twice first to Sharon Rose Lee Scudder in October 1967, they divorced and in 1971 he was married to Claudette Carlson Brummett.
He was father to Angela Marie, Kelley Sue, Kenneth Eugene, Robert Preston, James Leo, Shawn Patrick, Monty Lee and Steven Carl Bracelen.
