Dick was a corporate executive, a diplomat, vice-president (1949-1953), president (1954-1963), and board chairman (1963-1970), of IBM World Trade Corporation which he built as a new subsidiary of International Business Machines Corporation into a multibillion dollar world enterprise.


As American Ambassador to France (1970-1972), he helped establish first official contacts between United States and People's Republic of China.
