Joe, as he was always familiarly called, was the fourth son of a family of five brothers and one sister, whose parents were John C. and Sarah (Camp) Badger. He obtained his education in the school in District No. 1, Scott township, supplemented by a course in the Angola High school. He devoted several years of his early manhood to educational work and was accounted one of the most successful teachers of his time. His latter years were spent on the farm where he lived at the time of his death.
He united in marriage with Mary Phoeba Tingler on October 17, 1880. To them were born two sons, Leon and Floyd E., the former being called hence early in life. He is survived by his wife, one son, an aged mother and four brothers in his immediate family.
In 1898 he was elected to the office to township trustee by the voters of York township, and so faithfully and acceptably did he perform the duties of this office, that in 1908 he was again called to the same position. In the year 1893, the subject of the above sketch, with a company of friends and neighbors, obeyed the gospel under the ministration of Elder D. C. Hanselman, since which time he has lived an earnest, devoted christian, having served the congregation at North Scott in the capacities of deacon, elder and various other positions. He was also superintendent of the Sunday school at North Scott for many years. His character was above reproach and the large circle of acquaintances and neighbors who have come under his influence are better for his having been among them.
