Orchestra Conductor. He is acknowledged as one of the most important orchestra conductors of the 20th century. From 1924 to 1949, he was musical director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, where he championed modern composers, notably Alexander Scriabin, Jean Sibelius, Sergei Prokofiev, Igor Stravinsky, Maurice Ravel and Bela Bartok. He also helped to launch the careers of American composers Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein, and founded the Berkshire Music Center at the Tanglewood Festival in Lenox, Massachusetts - the most successful summer music festival in North America. The BSO's technical peak as an international-standard orchestra was reached under his tenure. He began his career as a distinguished double-bass virtuoso. For RCA Victor in the 78-rpm era, he made many recordings with the BSO. The Koussevitzky plot is located near the southwest corner of the cemetery.
