African American slave who spent the early part of his life in service to the Northup family.

He was originally from Rhode Island and later moved to Hoosick, Rensselaer County, NY. When Capt. Henry Northup died on 5 Jul 1797, Mintus was freed per his Will. He moved to Minerva, Essex County, NY where his sons Solomon and Joseph were born free.

His wife, Binore was considered a quadroon since she was 1/4 black. She died in Washington Co., NY in circa 1848. Mintus became a successful farmer who met the property requirements to vote. His sons were well-educated. Mintus' farm was on the road leading from Fort Edward to Argyle.

Capt. Henry Northup was a 1/2 uncle to Henry Bliss Northup of Sandy Hill, NY, rescuer of Solomon Northup.

Henry Bliss Northup's father is John Holmes Northup, he never owned slaves, his mother, Sarah Clarke-Northup was a Quaker. None of her four son's owned slaves:
1-Nicholas Carr Northup
2-Clarke Northup
3-Christopher Northup
4-John Holmes Northup

Capt. Henry Northup is a 1/2 uncle to named above.
Immanuel Northup ( the original owner of Mintus) having children with three wives.
Nicholas, Clarke, Christopher & John Holmes descend through the third wife, Ann Holmes Carr.
Capt. Henry Northup is from second wife, Sarah Gould.
