Victims Of Gas Fumes Identified

Funeral services are incomplete today for Mrs. Ruby Kalanzes, 34, of 238 South Heber Street, who body was found with that of a male companion in a tourist cabin on the Route 19-21 by-pass in Beckley yesterday about noon.

Arrangements for the man, identified late yesterday as Buford Bennett, 36, of Mabscott, have been completed by Keyser Funeral Home. He had registered for the cabins as W. J. Plumley, police reported.

Death of the pair was attributed to asphyxiation from fumes from a lighted gas stove. Bennett's body was lying on the bed in the cabin, while Mrs. Kalanzes' body was on the floor near the door leading from the building with one arm bent under her and the other stretched toward the door as if she had attempted to make her way out before she was overcome, police said.

The bodies were found by Mrs. Bertha Telfer, owner of a row of cabins, when she went to clean the room finding the door locked and unable to get a response to her knocks, she loosened a screen from a window and entered, discovering the dead couple.

Mrs. Kalanzes is survived by her mother, who resides in Virginia; her estranged husband, of Clarksburg; and a daughter who had been spending the holidays with her father in Clarksburg.

Bennett, who was born at Pear on July 4, 1914, was the son of W. J. and Reba Bennett. On October 31, 1934, he married Opal Garten, and for the past three years had resided at Mabscott, coming there from New.

Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Bennett, of Abraham; his wife; two children, James Daris and Billy Ray, both at home; two sisters, Mrs. Marcella Blankenship of Bluefield, and Miss Margaret Bennett of Fairmont; and five brothers, Robert, Beckley, Russell, Montgomery, Howard, with the army occupational forces in Germany, Steven and Ronald, both of Abraham.

The body will be removed from the Keyser Funeral Home to the home of his parents at Abraham tomorrow afternoon at 2 o 'clock.

Funeral services will be conducted at the home on Sunday at 2 p.m. Burial will be made in the Goodson Cemetery at Abraham.
