He was a 1946 graduate of Mt. Penn High School and attended the Wharton School of Business.
During the Korean War he served with the U.S. Army 216th Chemical Company at Rocky Mountain Arsenal. Clayton was a member of the American Legion Endicott-Union Post 82 in Endicott, N.Y. He sold bingo cards weekly until moving to Pennsylvania in 2004.
Clayton retired from IBM in 1989, following 36 years of service in Reading, Trenton, N.J., and Endicott, N.Y.
In August 2004 he became a resident of Country Meadows in Mechanicsburg and more recently a patient at ManorCare in Carlisle.
Clayton was very active with many charities in the Binghamton area, with the First Congregational UCC and the Tri-Cities Opera among his favorites.
Clayton is survived by a brother, George F. Lance (Janice) of Etters, and a sister, Mary L. Moll (Lester) of Wyomissing. In addition there are four nieces, two nephews, two grandnieces, three grandnephews and several cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents and a nephew.
Following Clayton's wishes, his body has been donated to Hershey Medical Center for further research. Services will be held later at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in the Charles Evans Cemetery in Reading.
