The following account is taken from Charles tombstone, his family Bible, his grandchildren and two of his former pupils who were living in 1929: "When a very young man, Charles Foster Stetson sailed on a Maine coaster which was wrecked off Cape Hatteras. He came ashore at Nags Head, married and settled at Colington, NC. He served in the Confederate Army and lost a leg at Roanoke Island, just across the sound from Nag's Head. He became the school teacher."
