The grave of 10-year-old Hannah Elizabeth Roman is marked by a small, decorative headstone that is immediately recognizable as that of a child. Although the use of sandstone was far more prevalent during the colonial era, the design of Hannah's marker eschews the grim imagery of that period, and instead reflects the sentiment of the mid-Victorian years in which she lived and died. Among the traditional funerary symbols seen here are bas-relief florals, representing the brevity & fragility of life on earth, and in the center of the swag atop the stone, a butterfly symbolizing resurrection.
