Funeral services for Mrs. Oscar (Bertha H.) Zessin of Madison were held Friday, April 13 at 2:00 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church in Green Garden. The Rev. Carl R. Lilienkamp officiated. Kay Finkral was the organist with singing by the congregation. Burial was in St. John Cemetery at Green Garden.
Serving as pallbearers were grandsons Keith Zessin of Omaha, Larry Zessin of Tekamah, Vernon Zessin of Oakland, Dean Zessin of Madison, Bruce Effland of Denver, Colorado and Jerry Jacobi of Norfolk.
Bertha H. Zessin, the daughter of Martin and Wilhelmina Sattler, was born at Koenrgsberg, East Russia, on March 30, 1891 and passed away at a Norfolk Hospital Monday, April 9. She was 88 years of age.
In May of 1900 she came with her family to America. The family lived in Iowa for a few years, before moving to the Madison area where Mrs. Zessin has lived since.
On Februeary 8, 1911 she was married to Oscar Zessin. Following their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Zessin lived on a farm southwest of Madison until 1954 when they moved into Madison to make their home.
She is survived by her seven children; Arthur Zessin and Mrs. Ronald (Vera) Scheer both of Madison, Mrs. Richard (Clara) Mann of Phoenix, Arizona, Walter Zessin of Oakland. Mrs. Don (Viola) Sparks of Omaha, Mrs. Lester (Francis) Tessum of Norfolk and Harold Zessin of Clarinda, Iowa; seventeen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren.
Mrs. Zessin was proceded in death by her husband, Oscar in 1974 and one son.
