Thomas Jefferson Chapman had the notoriety of being the first legal hanging in Coles County. He was tried and found guilty of killing Nicholas Hubbard August 17, 1884 in that county.

Thomas Jefferson Chapman's father (stepfather) met the train bearing his son's casket at Rose Hill and buried the boy in the Hunt Cemetery, he was 20 years old.
