HOULKA Mark Twain Alexander, 83, died Thursday, July 6, 2000, at the State Veterans Home in Oxford. He was born April 1, 1917, to Orlando Lee and Nancy "Katie" Martin Alexander. He was a World War II veteran, Battery "B" 206th A.A.A. (A.W.) BN, and retired from the Mississippi State Highway Department. He was longtime active member of Schooner Valley Baptist Church in Houlka, where he was a deacon, song leader and Sunday school teacher.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Schooner Valley Baptist Church with Dr. Bufford G. Easley and the Rev. Robert Earl Alexander officiating. Southern Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Silvia Davidson Alexander; four children, David Donald "Ben" Alexander and his wife, Peggy, of Houlka, William Paul Alexander and his wife, Mary Frances, of Houlka, Ruth Hall and her husband, David, of Pontotoc and Darthie Galloway and her husband, Harlan of Houlka; eight grandchildren, Kim Gann, Keith Alexander, Kristin Alexander, Karen Alexander, Cynthia Moss, Mark Hall, Grant Galloway and Blake Galloway; three stepgrandchildren, Erica, Nicholas and Lamar Bigham; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Dennis Alexander of Vardaman.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Bayne Alexander; five sisters, Carris Barker, Bertie Gibson, Virgie Blue, Ludie Johnson and Dede Fleming.

Pallbearers will be Billy Fred Alexander, R.A. Easley, Wade Easley Jr., Pete Gibson, Rick Huffman and Jerrell Fleming.

Honorary pallbearers will be John Fortner and Hubert Morphis.

The body will lie in state at the church until service time today.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Schooner Valley Baptist Church Building Fund.
