Mrs. Alice A. Flint, for many years a resident of this city, passed away at the Galesburg Cottage hospital last Friday night after undergoing a very serious operation. Her illness lasted only about two weeks and a week ago last Monday she went to this hospital where the operation was performed and it was thought that she was recovering nicely, but her heart proved unequal to stand the shock. The news received here last week stated that she was getting along nicely and so the announcement of her death came as a shock to her many friends.
Alice A. Connelly, daughter of Samuel J. and Mary Connelly, was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, on July 31, 1850, and passed away in Galesburg August 5, 1921, at the age of 71 years and 6 days.
In her early girlhood she came west with her parents and lived for a short time at Burlington, Iowa, and then the family moved to Toulon and it was here that the most of her life was spent. She attended the Toulon schools and took a part in the school and church life at that time.
She was married February 16, 1871, to George P. Flint, of this city. Mr. Flint was a stock buyer and is remembered by many of our people who were here at that time. His death occurred in 1888.
To this union were born eleven children, six of whom survive, namely, Fred W. Flint, of Altona; Mrs. Henrietta Bell, Mrs. Edith Stegal and Misses Margaret Flint, Jessie Flint and Florence Flint, all of Galesburg. Besides these she leaves to mourn her loss one brother, Frank B. Connelly, of Billings, Montana, and one sister, Mrs. E. G. Flanagan, of San Diego, California, and nine grandchildren.
Mrs. Flint united with the Toulon Congregational church when about eight years old and kept her membership here until 1913, when she had it transferred to the Central Congregational church of Galesburg. In 1907 she moved to Galesburg and from that time until her death lived there with her daughters.
She was a regular attendant at the church and Sunday school and looked upon this attendance as a privilege, rather than a duty. Seldom was she absent from these services and when she was, it was on account of illness or some other unavoidable reason. Her Christian faith was so strong and genuine that it was instilled in all her children and they are all today following the same way.
A short funeral service was held Monday morning in the Central Congregational church at Galesburg and was in charge of its pastor, Dr. C. E. McKinley. That afternoon the body was brought by auto to Toulon and the service was held at 2:30 o'clock in the Congregational church with which she had been so long a member. These were also in charge of Dr. McKinley. The music was furnished by a quartet consisting of Mrs. George Brace, Miss Gertrude Cooley, H. W. Walker and Harry Lloyd. The bearers were F. B. Nicholson, T. J. Nicholson, Roy Simmerman, C. B Strayer, J. B. Dickinson and E. H. Buffum. The burial was in Toulon cemetery.
