Abby G. Keeling, 101, passed away Monday, Jan. 24, 2011. Following a graveside service at Clifton Memorial Park, a celebration of Abby's long and very special life will be held at noon on Friday, Jan. 28, at the First United Methodist Church in Clifton. Visitation will follow the celebration in the Fellowship Room.

Abby is survived by her daughter, Miriam Jordon, of Salado; son, Edgar R. Keeling and his wife, Joan, of Brady; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters, Louise Burton and Mary Baskin; brother, Horace P. Goodrich and his wife, Merle; and many other family members and friends.

Abby Goodrich Keeling, 101, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2011, in Salado.

Born in Marlin on Oct. 7, 1909, Abby was the oldest of nine children born to the late Nick Whitney Goodrich, Sr. and Louise Finks Goodrich. She attended the University of Texas and was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority.

Abby married her childhood sweetheart, Edgar R. Keeling on June 30, 1930, in Marlin. The couple moved to Stephenville to begin their family. In 1946, Abby and Edgar moved to Clifton where they established Keeling's Department Store, an enterprise they ran together for 26 years.

Abby and Edgar were longtime members of the Methodist Church and deeply involved in civic life in and around Clifton and Bosque County. The couple was honored by the Clifton Chamber of Commerce in 1989 for their outstanding community support and work for the chamber. They received the Bosque Memorial Museum's Heritage Award in 1992 for outstanding community service and in 1997, were again recognized by the Chamber of Commerce with a Lifetime Achievement Award. She was active in the Goodall-Witcher Hospital Auxiliary and was an avid bridge player. Upon her centennial birthday, she was honored by the mayor of Clifton's proclamation of "Abby Keeling Day" in the city.

She was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband of 67 years, Edgar; a multitude of friends and family, most recently her granddaughter-in-law, Cris Keeling.

She is survived by her children, Miriam Jordan, of Salado, and Edgar R. Keeling, Jr. and his wife, Joan, of Brady; grandchildren, Scott Jordan and his wife, Keri, of Katy, Lee Keeling and his wife, Tami, of Victoria, Karen Chapman of Caldwell, Jim Keeling of Aledo, Kay Calloway and her husband, Chris, of Wheaton, Ill., and Amy Rhea and her husband, Robert, of Austin; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters, Louise Burton, of Marlin, and Mary Baskin, of San Antonio; a brother, Horace P. Goodrich and his wife, Merle, of Houston; throngs of nieces, nephews, and cousins, and countless close friends and acquaintances.

Following a family graveside burial service, a celebration of Abby's long and very special life was held at noon, Friday, Jan. 28 at the First United Methodist Church in Clifton. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to the First United Methodist Church or the charity of choice.

Arrangements were entrusted to Clifton Funeral Home of Clifton.
