He was born in Youngsville on Dec. 29, 1913, a son of the late Hurby DeHomer Haupin and Olive Blanche Price Haupin, and was a lifelong resident of Warren County. He was a 1933 graduate of Lottsville High School.
He had been employed by Phelps Appliance in refrigeration service, had worked as a welder at Struthers Wells and later for Mead Machine & Iron Works. He was formerly employed by C. Beckley and Co., owned C&H Appliance, and had been self-employed in commercial refrigeration.
A member of Grace United Methodist Church and its Friendship Class, he served on the church administrative board and as a trustee. He was also a member of Circle 8 Square Dancers, Tarrs Stars, Draggin' Wheels, the National Square Dance Campers Association, and Chapter 008 Ramblin' Squares.
Surviving are his wife, Flora Madeline Marker Haupin, with whom he celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on April 17, 1988; a daughter, Jene Haupin, at home; three sons, Larry Haupin of Warren, Vincent Haupin of Spring Hill, Tenn., and David Haupin of Wheaton, Illinois.; eight grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and three nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Avis Phelps, in 1967; an infant brother, Meredith; and a grandson, Spec.4 Robert Lloyd Haupin.
The Mark S. Patterson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church by the Rev. S. James Schmittle and the Rev. Wayne Price. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. The family suggests that those wishing to place memorials do so with contributions to Grace United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
A funeral service for Melvin R. Haupin, 74, of R.D. 1, Peterson rd., Scandia, who died in Warren General Hospital on Sunday, July 24, 1988, was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church by Pastors S. James Schmittle and Wayne Price.
Bearers for burial in Oakland Cemetery were Frank Flood, Charles Tuttle, LeRoy Hammerbeck, Wil Mead, Norm Perschke and Martin Glickman. The Mark S. Patterson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
