NEAR ALTHEIMER

Oldest Member of the Hudson
Family of Jefferson County

John Asbury Hudson, oldest member of the Hudson family of Jefferson County and
for more than half a century prominent planter near Altheimer, died at his home
near Altheimer Sunday morning after an illness of two weeks.
A son of James Asbury Hudson and Nancy Gillespie Hudson, he was born at Locust
Cottage, Jefferson County, on March 28, 1856 and was one of eight children.
He attended the schools of Jefferson County and following his graduation from
Cumberland University, Lebanon, Tenn., returned to Jefferson County and acquired
a plantation near Altheimer. He had operated his plantation properties there
since and had large holdings.
Mr. Hudson was a member of the Robert E. Lee Masonic Lodge of Altheimer and
was a member of the board of stewards and one of the eldest members in point of
service of the Methodist church at Altheimer.
He lived a useful life was recognized as a leader in business and church
circles, and had many friends in this section who respected him for his many
admirable qualities.
He was first married in 1884 to Lula Holmes and to them were born two children
a son, Walter C. Hudson, who died in Fort Worth, Tex., in May 1935, and a
daughter Mrs. A. E. Chambers of Fort Worth. His first wife died in 1888.
He was married in 1915 to Mrs. Fannie Culp Burnett, who survives him.
In addition to his widow and daughter he is survived by a brother, Fred M.
Hudson, of Miami, Fla., who arrived here today: a grandson, John A. Hudson of
Dallas, Tex., and a large number of nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be held at 3 o’clock Tuesday afternoon from the First
Methodist Church in Pine Bluff conducted by Dr. Francis A. Reddin the pastor,
and the Rev. R. A. Teeter,pastor of the Methodist Church at Altheimer.
Burial will be in the family burying ground at Locust Cottage in charge of
Holderness-Thornhill Mortuary.
Active pallbearers will be the following nephews of Mr. Hudson: Howard
Hudson, Harvey Hudson, Harvey Hogg, Mercer Sligh, Robert Ryland, Robert M.
Vance, Felix G. Smart, Jimmie Hall, Quincy Nash, Ray West of Pine Bluff; Grant
Hogg, El Dorado; Fred Hudson, Dumas, William M. McDonald, Little Rock, James
Hudson, Helena; Bill Love, Morrilton; Guy Fulk, Little Rock.

Funeral services for John Asbury Hudson, 78, the oldest member of the Hudson
family of Jefferson County who died at his home near Altheimer Sunday were held
this afternoon at 3 o’clock from the First Methodist Church here conducted by
the pastor, Dr. Francis A. Buddin, and the Rev. R. A. Teeter, pastor of the
Methodist Church at Altheimer.
Burial was on the family burying ground at Locust Cottage in charge of
Holderness-Thornhill Mortuary.
Active pallbearers will be the following nephews of Mr. Hudson: Howard
