Although his family had been in Wisconsin since 1843, he grew up speaking Norwegian. June 28,1922 in Brainerd, MN, he married Nellie Elizabeth Hamlet, and together they reared their four children on their farm at Swanburg, MN. Marvin's parents had settled in Swanburg about 1905 with their nine children, and many of them remained in the area, creating a large extended family. His two brothers, Clarence and Oscar, lived on neighboring farms.
