DIED SOON AFTER RETIRING FROM SHOE INDUSTRY
St. Clair S. Chappell Was Ill Only Few Days -- Prominent in Life of Auburn, Plant President

St. Clair S. Chappell, 65, well known in Auburn business and fraternal circles, died early this morning at his home, 5 Eastern Parkway, following a brief illness. About six months ago, Mr. Chappell retired from business after a long and active career with the shoe industry.

At the time of his retirement from business, Mr. Chappell was president of the arm of Marshall, Meadows & Stewart of this city, manufacturers of shoes, and previous to that connection was for some time with Dunn & McCarthy.

Born in the Town of Aurelius, Mr. Chappell resided in Auburn 30 years. Mr. Chappell was an active member of First Baptist Church, of which he was a senior deacon at the time of his death. He was a member of the Auburn Rotary Club and a trustee of the Auburn Savings bank.

Mr. Chappell was active in the Masonic fraternity, a member of Salem Town Lodge, F. & A. M. of Cayuga; and David's Chapter, 34, R. A. M.; King Hiram Council, 18, R. & S. M.; Salem Town Commandery, 16, Knights Templar, of Auburn; and Damascus Temple, A. A. O. N. M. Shrine of Rochester.

Mr. Chappell is survived by his wife, Mrs. Josephine Porter Chappell; two daughters, Mrs. Newton E. Randall and Mrs. George M. Herrling of Auburn; two brothers, B. B. Chappell of Union Springs and Paul R. Chappell of Cayuga; a sister, Mrs. Grace C. Coe of Auburn; three grandchildren, Gretchen and Thomas Herrling and Claire Randall, all of Auburn; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the family home. Rev. Dr. J. Gordon Hynes, pastor of First Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Fort Hill Cemetery.

Committal services will be held at the grave by Salem Town Lodge, 326, F. & A. M., of Cayuga.

Many Attend Funeral Rites for Prominent Industrialist

Funeral services for St. Clair S. Chappell, widely known Auburnian who for many years was active in the industrial field were held at 3 o'clock this afternoon at the family home, 5 Eastern Parkway. The services were largely attended, among those at the rites being business and social asociates of Mr. Chappell from other places, as well as of Auburn.

Rev. Dr. J. Gordon Hynes, pastor of First Baptist Church of which Mr. Chappell was an official and active member, officiated. Burial was in Fort Hill Cemetery. Committal services were conducted by Salem Town Lodge, 326, F. & A. M., of Cayuga of which Mr. Chappell was a member. A delegation of Auburn members of the Masonic fraternity attended the services.

Honorary bearers were: Daniel L. Ramsey, Frederick L. Emerson, Frederick L. Griswold, G. Earle Treat, Frederick M. Everett, William Bryson, Harry D. Benham, James F. Marshall, Robert I. Emmet, Rexford L. Morris, and Weir Stewart.

The active bearers were: Harry L. Van Arsdale, Raymond S. King, Louis Krayka, Paul F. Colwell, J. Marshall Hunter, William B. Dunning, Jay W. Robinson and Arthur B. Brown.

Mr. Chappell had been ill only a few days. Until his retirement six months ago he was president at the Marshall, Meadows and Stewart Shoe Company.
