Early Days Resident Dies

Word was received in Fort Benton Monday by Mrs John T. Lepley and Mrs E. L. Crane telling of the death of their aunt, Mrs Jane Thies, which occurred in Minneapolis at 6PM December 24th. Mrs Thies' death was caused by double pneumonia which followed a serious injury on December 13th. Mrs Thies fell at her home and fractured one of her hips and her advanced age and seriousness of the injury were too much to withstand.

Mrs. Thies was born July 10th, 1854, and was past eighty years of age. She came to Montana in the early days, arriving in Fort Benton in 1878. In 1880 she was married to Mr. (Frederick) Thies and moved to Fort Shaw, where she resided for five years. Mr. Thies was stationed there with the Army. She returned to Fort Benton in 1885 and resided here until 1898 when she went to Minneapolis, where she has since resided.

She visited Fort Benton a number of times and is well known and loved by the older residents of this state. She leaves to mourn her death two children; Fred Thies and Mrs W.M. (Sophie) Chowning, both residing in Minneapolis; two sisters, Mrs J. E. Bower, of Helena, and Mrs. A. A. Cabinass of Los Angeles, and one brother, J. O. Patterson, of Montague; eight grand-children and one great-grand child, besides other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday in Minneapolis, and the body shipped to Helena where interment services will be held at 11:00 o'clock Friday and burial made in the Helena cemetery.
