FORMER RESIDENT PASSES SUDDENLY

Fred Thies (66) Found Dead In His Apartment Early Monday

Fred Thies, a resident of this county for a good many years, passed away at his apartment in Great Falls early Sunday evening, death being caused by a heart attack. He had visited here during Sunday at the home of his cousin, Mrs. John T. Lepley, accompanying Jack Patterson, of Billings, here to spend the day with his sister.

The two returned to Great Falls early Sunday where Mr. Patterson was to catch a bus back to Billings. Mr Thies accompanied him to the bus and said he would go to his apartment and read the paper before going to bed. When he failed to show up at his place of business early Monday morning and investigation was made and he was found dead in his chair, holding the paper.

Fred Thies was born November 27 (??), 1883 at Fort Missoula; son of Lieut. and Mrs. Frederick Thies, of Fort Shaw. The father was with the troops stationed at the fort there. The mother Jennie Patterson Thies, was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Patterson, who were early day residents of Fort Benton. Lieutenant Thies died when the son was five years old, leaving the mother, a daughter and the one son. The family made their home in this city for several years, moving to Minneapolis in the late 1890's where the children were educated.

As a young man, Fred returned to this area and was employed by the Lost Lake Livestock Co. He was united in marriage in Minneapolis in 1908, to Miss Martha Moffitt, neice of the late Mrs. Chas. E. Duer. In 1912 the family went to Medford, Oregon, where they lived until returning here in 1918. He operated the Motor Inn, just south of the River Press office, with the late Harold Fisk, the two building the garage as a partnership. Mr Fisk was killed in World War I. Mr. Thies left with his family for Minneapolis about 1927 and was with an automobile company there. They returned to Great Falls about five years ago and he was associated with his cousin, Ed Bower, in an upholstering business; "Ed & Fred's Place". Mrs. Thies passed away on November 10, 1947, in Helena.

Members of the family were all born in Fort Benton, three daughters and one son. Those surviving are Mrs, Norman Nixon (Faith), Minneapolis; Mrs James Ellis (Martha) and Mrs Sid Hendrickson (Miriam), of Lincoln, Montana, and Fred Thies, of Minneapolis, also nine grandchildren; an aunt, Mrs. J. E. Bower, of Helena; an uncle, J.O. Patterson, Montague, a number of cousins and other relatives and a large circle of friends.

Thies was a member of both the local Masonic and Elks lodges.

Funeral services are being held from the Episcopal church in Helena this Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock and are being conducted by the Rev. Dean Wilson. Burial will be in the family plot (Forest Vale Cemetery) in Helena. The relatives have the sympathy of all in their bereavement.
