Father Dion, as he was familiarly called, was a native of Hamilton, Ontario. With his older brother, Alban, the later
Father Philip A. Best, he entered the nearby novitiate conducted by Father Pius Mayer at Niagara Falls. On May 23, 1881, he was admitted to vows and on March 23, 1889, with several others, ordained to the priesthood. He served successively in Pittsburgh, Niagara Falls, New Baltimore and again at Niagara Falls and finally at Englewood. At New Baltimore, then the novitiate and house of studies, and therefore a large community, Father Dion held the positions of Professor of Mathematics and History and that of procurator of the house. Both, at Niagara Falls and Englewood, he served in the two fold capacity of prior and
pastor. In the latter capacity he prepared the way for the erection of the present St. Cecilia Church, which undertaking however, was achieved by his immediate successor in the pastorate, Father Angelus Lager.
