August Jarosz Killed When Car Plunges Through Bridge Rail
Accident Happened Late Monday Night--Not Found Until Late Tuesday
August Jarosz, 45, was killed late Monday night when his car plunged through a bridge guard rail on a country road three miles west and one half mile south of Hazard. The car carried away the entire bridge rail on the east side and dropped about ten feet and being partially hidden was not found until nearly 24 hours later. Jarosz('s) death was apparently caused by a broken neck.
Sheriff Hancock estimated the accident happened about 11 o'clock on Monday night, but it was not discovered until six o'clock Tuesday night. A son, Arnold, 19 and Leslie Rasmussen found the car after they had noticed the guard rail missing and went back to investigate. According to Arnold the family had gone to Kearney Monday and returned home about 9:30. The father went to town and when he did not return they thought he had possibly gone on to Farwell where his father was ill. When he had not returned late the next day they decided something was wrong and went to look for him.
Exactly what caused the car to swerve to the right off the bridge is unknown. The car was going north when the accident happened.
The deceased is survived by his wife and four children: Arnold, 19, Irene, 15, Virginia, 12, and Maxine 7, in addition to other relatives. He was an ex-service man. The body was taken to Litchfield pending funeral arrangements. The family lived on a farm a short distance south of where the accident happened.
