James L Scott was born in Raleigh county, W Va, Jan 15, 1845. Departed this life at Yates Center, Kansas, August 30, 1910.
In 1876 he went to the state of Nebraska taking a homestead in Buffalo county, making this his home for about 18 years. Returning to Virginia he was united in marriage to Miss Laura daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles Charlton, Dec 7, 1883, bringing her to his western home in the spring of 1884. To this union five children were born, three sons and two daughters. He united with the church of Jesus Christ when just emerging from boyhood to manhood and has lived an exemplary Christian life. In more mature years he was an elder in the church for a number of years. Leaving the mantle of his Master to those he associated with in life, he enlisted in the Union army, Co D, 7th W Va Cavalry in November of 1864, serving one year and receiving his honorable discharge in 1865. In early life he was a school teacher, having taught in the states of West Virginia, Illinois and Nebraska. His ability, energy and sincerity enabled him to rank among the leading teachers of his profession. In 1910 he moved to this his last home, in Woodson county. During this short residence he has made many warm friends. He leaves three sons, two daughters, four brothers and two sisters. The children were all present except one son, Wayne, who is in Washington, and whom they were unable to reach. Two brothers, A J Scott of Hastings, Neb, J P Pack. a brother-in-law from Oklahoma with Mr and Mrs Charles Charlton and daughter Miss Maude, father, mother and sister of Mrs Scott were present at the funeral services which were held at the home, one mile west of town, Friday, Sept 2nd. Music was furnished by a quartet of young women from the Christian church. At the request of the family W F Guy read the 5th chapter of Second Corinthians and made a few appropriate remarks. G H Lamb offered prayer, after which My Guy read an account of the life and death of Mr Scott. A L Ragsdale then spoke briefly from Matt 11:28. The services were attended by a large number of the friends and neighbors.
